General Information
The Department of Social Communications, Literature, and Culture was established in December 2023 after the establishment of the State Tax University through the reorganization of the Department of Social Communications and Language Training (the name prior to December 2023).
The department provides training for students in both full-time and part-time programs in:
- The educational-professional program "Journalism and Public Relations", field of study 06 Journalism, specialty 061 Journalism for the training of applicants of the first (bachelor's) level of higher education (Certificate of accreditation received in 2021 for a term of five years).
- The educational-professional program "Economic Journalism", field of study 06 Journalism, specialty 061 Journalism for the training of applicants of the second (master's) level of higher education.
History of the department
The Department of Journalism, Ukrainian Literature and Culture was one of the first departments established at the educational institution – was established in January 1997 on the basis of the cyclic commission on Ukrainian language and literature, which was headed by O. Lutsenko. In 2017 the department celebrated its 20th anniversary. In the process of the development of the institution, it changed its name several times - from the Department of Language and Literature to the Department of Speech Communications and Culture, later - Ukrainian Literature and Culture, which reflected the main content and directions of its activity.
The first head of the department was Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor N. Zykun. The department worked under her leadership from January 1997 to December 2006. From 2006 to 2014, the head of the department was Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor I. Zaitseva. In 2015 Associate Professor N. Zykun was appointed as the head of the department after being elected by competition. The deputy head of the department is Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor O. Kalyta. Among the first teachers of the department were A. Denysenko, Z. Pavlenko, K. Rud, H. Skurativska and O. Kalyta.
Since December 2021, Tetiana Hyrina, Doctor of Sciences in Social Communications, Professor has been appointed as the head of the Department of Language Training and Social Communications. In December 2023, the department was reorganized and renamed to the Department of Social Communications, Literature and Culture.
Human resources. At present the educational process at the department is provided on a permanent basis by 3 doctors of science, 3 professors, 7 candidates of science, 7 associate professors. The training of journalists is facilitated by 3 Honored Journalists of Ukraine (one of them, V. Bradov, works on a permanent basis). Additionally, practicing journalists are engaged in teaching activities on a part-time basis, including Candidate of Philological Sciences and journalist V. Mukan, as well as Honored Journalists of Ukraine A. Daugule and S. Ostapa.
The main goal of the department's teachers is to cultivate in students a sense of national identity, high linguistic competence in professional communication, instill love for the spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people, and foster the development of students' creative abilities.
The creative search of the department's team becomes more purposeful through the organization of annual academic events such as the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Ukrainian Language and Culture in the Modern Humanitarian Chronotope", the International Scientific and Practical Seminar "Trends and Perspectives in Professional Vocabulary Formation", roundtable discussions on "The World of Ukrainian Word" and others.
The academic achievements of the teaching staff of the department are evidenced by the publication of textbooks and monographs such as "Workshop on Ukrainian Language for Legal Professionals", "Ukrainian Language for Lawyers", "Culture of Professional Communication for Tax Service Employees", "Ukrainian Language and Literature for Applicants to the National University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine", "Ukrainian Language for Applicants to the Kyiv Financial and Economic College of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine", "Organization of Work of State Tax Service Authorities with Mass Media", "Document Management in Tax Authorities", "Public Awareness Work in the Activities of the State Tax Service" and others.
Recently, there has been active development in the field of scientific research related to social communications, media studies, and journalism. Currently, this direction is represented by a series of monographs and textbooks authored by the department's scholars, including: Zykun N.I. "Satirical Publicism of the Dnieper Region in the Information Space of Ukraine: Formation, Development, Genre-Thematic Forms", Monograph. Kyiv: Alerta, 2015. 410 p.; Gorevalov S.I., Zykun N.I. Zaporizhzhia: KPU, 2018. 296 p. And other scientific publications.
Striving to improve the cultural and linguistic proficiency of students, the department's instructors annually organize the first stage of the International Competition for Experts in the Ukrainian Language named after P. Yatsyk, the first stage of the International Language and Literature Competition named after T. Shevchenko, and the All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation of National Unity.
The Economic Journalism Club for students, University cadets and high school students of Pryirpinnia works on the basis of the department. Creative meetings with word masters, workshops with famous journalists, and TV presenters are regularly organized. Among them, just in the 2019-2020 academic year, were:
Andriy Kulykov, host and chairman of the board of Hromadske Radio and Pavlo Kazarin, host of "Reverse Countdown" on UA: First, "Morning in the Big City" on ICTV, and "Edges of Truth" on the "24" channel, as well as a reviewer for Radio Free Europe; Vitaliy Holubyev, media trainer, secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, founder of the "School of Universal Journalist" and author of six books on media literacy; Diana Panchenko, TV presenter on NewsOne; Anastasiia Daugule, TV presenter on Inter TV channel; Oleksandr Horokhovskyi, head of the fact-checking project " Without Lies"; Oleksandra Yefymenko, freelance journalist cooperating with various media outlets; Svitlana Vasylenko, radio journalist; Olena Shevchenko, HR director of the Inter TV channel; Ihor Darmostuk, founder and editor-in-chief of the "KyiVlast" website.
Students majoring in journalism undergo internships at leading mass media outlets with which cooperation agreements are concluded. The department cooperates with local media such as the newspaper "Irpin Herald" and the television studio "ITV." Future journalists actively participate in forums and festivals, representing the department and the university with dignity.
The main goal of the department's activities is to meet the demand of modern higher education seekers for professional journalistic and language-humanitarian training, creating conditions for the development of the personal and professional potential of future journalists and specialists in other fields for the financial and legal segments of state activities, as well as fostering national consciousness socially active citizen.
The strategic objective of the department is to increase the scientific and pedagogical potential, the volume of internal and external communications within the structure of the Faculty of Social and Humanitarian Technologies, Sports and Rehabilitation, the University, and the city, participation in international educational and scientific communication events, grant programs, and social initiatives, expansion of activities, development of partnership relations with related departments of higher education institutions in Ukraine and abroad, and media organizations.
Innovative teaching technologies are used by the department within the approved long-term work plan, including project-based learning, developmental learning technology, information technology in education, creative personality development technology, student-centered learning, and teaching as research (research tasks in subjects, youth research work).
In the educational process, the Moodle platform is actively used, where educational-methodical complexes have been formed for each academic discipline. In the 2020-2021 academic year, 41 distance learning courses for both full-time and part-time students were certified. The content of educational and methodological materials and their updates for all academic disciplines are constantly being updated.
Internationalization of the educational process is carried out in the format of guest lectures by scientists from foreign higher education institutions (according to the Prospective Program of Guest Academic Lectures); involvement of scholars from other countries in scientific and communication events, work in the editorial boards of scientific journals, and implementation of joint scientific projects.
To improve the professional and scientific level, the department members undergo internships and professional development training, participate in international educational and scientific projects (details can be found in the "Internationalization" section).
The department actively develops partnerships with leading related universities in Ukraine and abroad, including the Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Autonomous University of Zacatecas (Mexico), Department of Humanities (other).
In the educational process, emphasis is placed on the practical component (project-oriented activities, field trips, excursions to media editorial offices, etc.), and internships are based on 22 internship agreements (details can be found in the "Stakeholders" section). A highly effective practice of transferring professional knowledge to journalism students at the university is the organization of master classes conducted by recognized professionals in the field – almost two dozen are held annually.
