History of the Department

The Department of Journalism, Ukrainian Philology, and Culture was one of the first in the educational institution, established in January 1997 on the basis of the cyclic commission for Ukrainian Language and Literature, which was headed by O. Lutsenko. In 2017, the department celebrated its 20th anniversary. In the course of the institution's development, it repeatedly changed its name: from the Department of Language and Literature to the Department of Speech Communications and Culture, and subsequently to the Department of Ukrainian Philology and Culture, which reflected the main content and directions of its activities.

The first Head of the Department was N. Zykun, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor. The department worked under her leadership from January 1997 to December 2006. From 2006 to 2014, the Head of the Department was I. Zaitseva, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor. In 2015, Assoc. Prof. N. Zykun was appointed Head of the Department after being selected through a competition. The Deputy Head of the Department is O. Kalyta, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor. Among the first lecturers of the department were A. Denisenko, Z. Pavlenko, K. Rud, H. Skurativska, and O. Kalyta.

Since December 2021, the Head of the Department of Language Training and Social Communications has been Tetiana Hyrіna, Doctor of Sciences in Social Communications, Professor. In December 2023, the department was reorganized and renamed the Department of Social Communications, Philology, and Culture.

Staffing. Currently, the educational process in the department is permanently provided by 3 Doctors of Sciences, 3 Professors, 7 Candidates of Sciences, and 7 Associate Professors. Journalists are trained by 3 Honored Journalists of Ukraine (one of whom, V. Bradov, works on a permanent basis). Practicing journalists are involved in teaching on a part-time basis, including V. Mukan, Candidate of Philological Sciences and journalist, and Honored Journalists of Ukraine S. Ostapa, D. Bernatska, O. Hlushchenko.

The leading goal of the department's lecturers is to foster national consciousness among students, develop a high level of linguistic competence in professional communication, instill a love for the spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people, and promote the creative abilities of student youth.

The creative pursuit of the Department’s staff is becoming more focused thanks to the holding of annual scientific events: the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Ukrainian Language and Culture in the Modern Humanitarian Time-Space” the International Scientific and Practical Seminar “Trends and Prospects for the Formation of Professional Vocabulary”, the Round Table “The World of the Ukrainian Word” and others.

The scholarly output of the Department's faculty is evidenced by the publication of educational manuals and monographs, including: “Practical Guide to the Ukrainian Language for Professional Purposes for Lawyers”, “Ukrainian Language for Lawyers”, “Culture of Professional Communication of Tax Service Employees”, “Ukrainian Language and Literature for Applicants to the National University of the State Tax Service of Ukraine”, “Ukrainian Language for Applicants to the Kyiv Financial and Economic College of the NU of the STSU”, “Оrganization of Work of State Tax Service Bodies with Mass Media”, “Organization of Record Keeping in the State Tax Service Bodies”, “Mass Educational and Outreach Work in the Activities of the State Tax Service”, and others.

The field of scientific research related to social communications, media activity, and journalism studies has been actively developing recently. It is currently represented by a number of monographs and educational manuals published by the Department’s scholars: Zykun N. Satirical Journalism of the Dnieper Ukraine in the Information Space of Ukraine: Formation, Development, Genre-Thematic Forms: Monograph. Kyiv: Alerta, 2015. 410 p., Horevalov S., Zykun N. The Department hosts the Club of Economic Journalism for students of the University, and high school students from the Priirpinnia region. It organizes creative meetings with masters of the word and master classes with famous journalists and TV presenters. Among those who participated in the 2019–2020 academic year alone were: Andriy Kulykov, host and Chairman of the Board of Hromadske Radio (Public Radio); Pavlo Kazarin, host of “Zvorotny Vidlik” (Countdown) on UA: Pershyi (UA: First), “Ranku u Velykomu Misti” (Morning in a Big City) on ICTV, “Hrani Pravdy” (Facets of Truth) on TV “Сhannel 24” and columnist for the Ukrainian Service of Radio Svoboda (Radio Liberty). Students of the Journalism specialty undergo practical training in leading mass media outlets with which cooperation agreements have been concluded. The Department collaborates with local media, specifically the newspaper “Irpin’skyi Visnyk” and the television studio “ITV”. Students ‒ future journalists ‒ actively participate in forums and festivals, worthily representing the Department and the University.

The main goal of the Department’s activity is to meet the demand of the modern higher education applicant for professional journalistic and linguistic-humanitarian training tailored to their professional focus. This includes creating conditions for developing the personal and professional potential of future journalists and specialists in other fields for the financial and legal segments of state activity, as well as fostering a nationally conscious and socially active citizen.

The strategic objective of the Department is to build up the scientific and pedagogical potential, increase the volume of internal and external communications within the structure of the Faculty of Social and Humanitarian Technologies, Sports, and Rehabilitation, the University, and the city. This also involves participation in international scientific and educational communication events, grant programs, and social initiatives, as well as expanding the areas of activity and developing partnerships with related departments in higher education institutions in Ukraine and abroad, and with media organizations.

The Department’s faculty (Scientific and Pedagogical Personnel ‒ SPP) uses innovative teaching technologies within the framework of the approved prospective work plan. These include: project-based learning technology, developmental learning technology, information technology in education, technology for creative personality formation, student-centered learning (personally oriented learning), learning as research technology (research assignments in subjects, youth research and exploratory work).

The MOODLE platform is actively used in the educational process, where teaching and methodological complexes have been formed for every academic discipline. In the 2020–2021 academic year, 41 distance courses were certified for both full-time and extramural (part-time) students. The filling and updating of teaching and methodological materials for all academic disciplines is ongoing.

The internationalization of the educational process is carried out in the following formats: guest lectures by faculty from foreign higher education institutions (HEIs) (in accordance with the Prospective Program of Guest Academic Lectures); involvement of scholars from other countries in scientific and communication events, work on the editorial boards of scientific printed publications, and the implementation of joint research projects.

To enhance their professional and scientific level, the Department's faculty (Scientific and Pedagogical Personnel ‒ SPP) undergo internships and professional development (advanced training), and participate in international educational and scientific projects (details are available in the “Internationalization” tab).

The Department actively develops ties with related leading universities in Ukraine and abroad, including: The Silesian University of Technology (Republic of Poland), The Autonomous University of Zacatecas, Mexico (specifically, the Department of Humanities), among others.

In the educational process, an emphasis is placed on the practical component (project-oriented activities, off-site classes, excursions to media newsrooms, etc.) and the completion of practical training based on 22 signed agreements (details are available in the “Stakeholders” tab). An effective practice for transferring professional knowledge to journalism students at the University is the holding of master classes by recognized professionals in the field, with almost two dozen of these events conducted annually.
