We invite higher education students of the State Tax University to a guest lecture on the topic: "AI Hallucinations in the Legal Context: A Canadian Perspective"
The guest lecturer will be Oksana Romanov, a Canadian criminal lawyer and former prosecutor for the Government of Ontario.
As artificial intelligence tools become more deeply integrated into legal practice, understanding their limitations — in particular, the phenomenon of AI hallucinations — becomes key to maintaining professional competence and the integrity of the justice system.
Oksana Romanov will introduce the audience to the contemporary problem of AI-generated disinformation in the legal sphere, with a special emphasis on Canadian judicial practice.
After the lecture, you will be able to:
- define the concept of "AI hallucinations";
- recognize how fictional references to case law appear in legal documents;
- understand the scale of this phenomenon;
- familiarize yourself with recent decisions of the courts of the province of Ontario: R. v. Chand, 2025 ONCJ 282 (CanLII) Ko v. Li, 2025 ONSC 2965 (CanLII) — and find out the meaning of the court's conclusions;
- navigate the ethical aspects of the use of generative AI in legal work;
- identify the possible consequences of using unverified AI results: contempt proceedings, disciplinary sanctions, damage to professional reputation;
- learn about best practices for verifying AI-generated results.
After completing the guest lecture, you will receive:
- a PDF copy of the speaker's presentation;
- three analytical articles from Law360 Canada;
- full texts of three Canadian court decisions;
- “Ontario Lawyer’s Checklist for AI Output Review”.
