Every year on January 26, the world celebrates International Customs Day. For most of us, customs is associated with crossing borders, passport control, and luggage inspections. However, behind this facade lies a complex intellectual system that serves as the foundation of national security and the engine of the global economy.

The choice of date is no coincidence. On January 26, 1953, the first session of the Customs Co-operation Council took place in Brussels. At that time, only 17 European countries participated. Decades later, this organization transformed into the World Customs Organization (WCO), which today unites 185 member states controlling 98% of world trade.

The holiday has been officially observed since 1983 to highlight the vital role of customs services in establishing cultural and economic ties between nations.

Ukraine is a member of the World Customs Organization and joined the celebration of this day in 1992.

International Customs Day is an opportunity to express gratitude to those who hold the «keys to the border». This profession requires ironclad endurance, profound knowledge, and integrity. After all, every stamp in a document affects not only the movement of goods but also the internal stability of the country.

This is especially relevant for Ukraine, where customs authorities operate under wartime conditions, ensuring the logistics of humanitarian and military cargo.

The staff of the Scientific Library of the State Tax University expresses its sincere gratitude to all customs officials for their contribution to the development of Ukraine's economy, the protection of our borders, and the support of secure international trade. We also congratulate our students and alumni who have chosen this incredibly important and responsible professional path.

To commemorate this date, the library staff has prepared:

A book exhibition «Customs Affairs and State Customs Policy», which we invite everyone to visit at the textbook circulation desk (Building C, Room 372)

A video presentation of publications on this topic from our library collection

A video presentation of scientific publications dedicated to customs affairs, public administration, international trade, and economic processes titled «Customs Affairs Through the Pages of Books».
