Twenty years ago, back in 2006, it all started as a small student initiative in Chernivtsi. The initiator was Lesia Voroniuk, a student at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, who suggested that her classmates and professors choose one day to wear vyshyvankas together. Over two decades, this local student campaign has transformed into an international event celebrated across all continents.

In 2026, this holiday was celebrated under the slogan «Thanks to each of us». This is about everyone who wears a vyshyvanka to work, study, or just for a walk; who wears it under a bulletproof vest; who embroiders a shirt for loved ones abroad, preserving the genetic code of the nation. Thanks to each of us, Ukrainian traditions live, evolve, and inspire.

A vyshyvanka is not just clothing. It is our history, our protection, our collective prayer for victory and a free future. It is a living symbol of unity, identity, and pride in our roots – it is the soul of Ukraine! Today, the vyshyvanka stands as a symbol of resilience worldwide.

On May 21, 2026, on World Vyshyvanka Day, the staff of the Scientific Library greeted the large academic family of the State Tax University by wearing traditional embroidered shirts.

In the world of finance and law, we operate with numbers and codes every day. However, there is a special code that is not written in any legislative act, yet it is carved into the heart of every Ukrainian. This is the genetic code of our nation, encrypted in the threads of the vyshyvanka.

For our ancestors, every ornament was not merely a decoration, but an investment in the protection of the lineage:

  • Rhombuses, squares, and a sown field are the ancient symbols of fertility, material well-being, and financial prosperity. A kind of «deposit» for a rich harvest and a prosperous life.
  • Geometric lines and zigzags embodied protection against failures, balance, and stability, which are essential in any business endeavor.
  • The Tree of Life is a symbol of endless progress, scaling of experience, and unity of generations. Here, the past serves as a solid foundation-root, while our future is the crown reaching upward.

Each thread was a well-thought-out contribution to family safety, and the shirt became a true energetic shield.

For World Vyshyvanka Day, the Scientific Library of the State Tax University prepared a thematic book exhibition titled «Vyshyvanka: A Wondrous Beauty», which was displayed at the textbook lending department (Building C, Room 372).

The exhibition featured publications from the library's collection that reveal the history, symbolism, and regional characteristics of Ukrainian embroidery.

Complementing the book exposition was a video presentation, where, alongside the books, photographs of the university community – students, faculty, and staff united by their love for national traditions – were showcased.

Dear users!

We invite you to watch the video presentation and visit the STU Scientific Library in person to discover wonderful books on the history of Ukrainian lifestyle and culture!
